Twelve Preludes & Fugues

Saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Michael Pagan has long been interested in counterpoint and wrote this collection of 12 preludes and fugues over a nearly two-year stretch, with the Colorado Saxophone Quartet recording them over several sessions. Pagan incorporates written material, allowing for improvisation in some of the pieces, while successfully bridging the worlds of jazz and classical music. The quartet, which includes Pete Lewis (soprano and tenor), baritonist Clare Church, Tom Myer (tenor and soprano), and altoist Kurtis Adams (with Andrew Stonerock taking his place when he was unavailable), dives headfirst into the music, capturing the intricate ensembles, soloing with finesse when appropriate, and sounding like the group members intimately knew the music by the time they gathered to record it. Pagan's pieces don't easily fall into any one style, but they never fail to challenge the listener. Pagan's music is best appreciated in a quiet setting to appreciate the nuances of his compositions.
