Endlessness

アンビエント・ジャズの傑作『Space 1.8』から3年振り
ナラ・シネフロによるニュー・アルバム『Endlessness』のご案内です。

ジャズの感性、ハープとモジュラー・シンセが奏でる瞑想的なサウンド、そしてフォーク音楽やフィールドレコーディングを融合させた独特の世界観で、広く賞賛を集めるナラ・シネフロが、3年振りとなる待望のニュー・アルバム『Endlessness』を完成させた。
カリブ系ベルギー人の作曲家でミュージシャンのナラ・シネフロ。話題を呼んだ2021年のデビュー・アルバム『Space 1.8』は、サックス奏者のヌバイア・ガルシアやジェームス・モリソン (エズラ・コレクティヴ) をはじめ、新世代UKジャズ・シーンの最前線の面々の参加を得つつ、当時22歳のナラが作曲、プロデュース、演奏、エンジニアリング、録音、ミキシングを行い創り上げた。その静かな狂気と温かな歓喜に満ちたサウンドは、主要音楽メディアがこぞって大絶賛、ここ日本でも異例のロングヒットを記録している。
そんなナラ・シネフロが3年の時を経て完成させたニュー・アルバム『Endlessness』は、輪廻の概念を深く掘り下げた作品となっている。45分に及ぶアルバム全編を通してシンセサイザーが奏でるアルペジオが鳴り響く、精巧に練られた10曲で構成され、生命のサイクルと再生を祝福する壮大かつ魅惑的な祝祭を作り出している。ジャズ、オーケストラ、エレクトロニック・ミュージックを見事に溶け合わせるナラの超越的かつ多次元的な作曲家としての才能は、本作において、さらなる進化を遂げている。
本作に参加しているのはココロコのシーラ・モーリスグレイ、ブラック・ミディのモーガン・シンプソン、エズラ・コレクティヴのジェームス・モリソンの他、ライル・バートン、ヌバイア・ガルシア、ナシェット・ワキリ、ドウェイン・キルヴィントンといった新世代UKジャズ・シーンきってのミュージシャン、さらに若手音楽家からなるオーケストレートに所属する21人の弦楽器奏者が参加。ナラの巧みなバランス感覚を活かしたプロダクション、アレンジメント、エンジニアリングは、これらのミュージシャンたちを最小限のエフェクトだけで輝かせ、直接的かつ表面的な美しさと、その奥に存在する深みをシームレスに繋いでみせている。

Nala Sinephros music is both reserved and adventurous. It shyly beckons the listener to enter its space, then it soon reveals itself to be illuminating and transportive, full of spirit and in awe of the beauty of the universe. Space 1.8, her 2022 debut, was a mesmerizing fusion of spiritual jazz and ambient music that felt both celestial and earthly. The 2024 follow-up Endlessness is another cycle with each piece bearing a consecutively numbered similar title (appropriately enough, "Continuum"). Its cast includes returning guests such as keyboard player Lyle Barton and saxophone visionary Nubya Garcia, in addition to others such as black midi drummer Morgan Simpson and trumpeter Sheila Maurice-Grey (Kokoroko, Nerija), as well as string ensemble Orchestrate. Sinephros modular synths trickle in during the softly radiating opening track, which keeps a calm pace even as the drums snake through the gently swelling strings and saxophone. "Continuum 3" melds graceful harp plucking with dazzling synth soloing, and a pair of short, cloudy pieces build up to "Continuum 6," which thrills with its racing synth arpeggios and positive energy. Blissful strings carry the feeling into the heavens on the following tracks, which are also imbued with space-age synth textures. Finally, the album culminates with the ecstatic rush of finale "Continuum 10," which accelerates into a head-spinning climax. カリブ系ベルギー人作曲家による3年ぶり2作目。ジャズの感性を響かせながらハープとモジュラー・シンセが奏でる瞑想的なサウンドとエレクトロニック・ミュージックを見事に溶け合わせ、独自の世界観を展開。アルバム名は〈輪廻〉を意味しており、精巧に練られた10曲で生命のサイクルを表現したテーマ性も興味深い。名門ワープが惚れ込むのも納得だ。
