CMJ (8/21/00, p.24) - "...An essential addition to the [Western swing] cannon and an irresistible call to cut a rug."

Until someone puts together a good anthology of his classic RCA sides, excellent sound quality and tight performances make this the best available Hank Penny collection. These 30 radio transcriptions from 1951 (his complete output for Standard) range from novelties and covers of popular songs to swingin' instrumentals and remakes of his RCA hits. A young Jaye P. Morgan (then known as Mary Morgan) was in Penny's band and she appears on "I'm Waiting Just for You" and "I Like the Wide Open Spaces." Highlights include "Flamin' Mamie," "Peroxide Blonde," and the boogie "Big Footed Sam." ~ Greg Adams
