「ディス・ランド」リリース!

毎回趣向を凝らしたコンセプト・アルバムで話題を集めるピアニスト、ララ・ダウンズ。これまでリリースしたアルバムは米ビルボード・チャートで上位にランクインしている注目のピアニストですが、プロデューサー、キュレーター、アメリカにおける人種差別の問題に声をあげるなど文化活動家としても知られます。

「ラヴ・アット・ラスト」に次ぐPENTATONEレーベル第2弾は「ディス・ランド(この国)」ではアメリカ音楽史をテーマにしたアルバム。ダヴンズはアメリカの歴史を辿りながらメッセージ性の強いアルバムを完成させました。

今年(2024年)はガーシュウィンの「ラプソディ・イン・ブルー」初演100周年。それを記念し、ダヴンズは現代最高のサクソフォン奏者・編曲家のエドマー・コロンにアレンジを委嘱し「Rhapsody in Blue Reimagined(ラプソディ・イン・ブルー・リイマジンド)」がうまれました。タイトルの通り再構築・再創造された当作は演奏時間27分余の大曲に。移民と変革のアメリカの世紀を振り返った当作では二胡など中国の民族楽器やバタドラム、アフロ・カリビアンの打楽器も登場。あらゆる人種がこの大陸に住み、そして共存していることを強く表現しています。エドウィン・アウトウォーター指揮のもとこの初演・世界初録音は大成功をおさめました。当作は各配信サイトで先行リリースされており、アメリカを中心に話題の新作として注目されています。

最終トラックでは、ガーシュウィンが弾いたラプソディ・イン・ブルーの歴史的音源や自身の演奏をバックにダヴンズが書いたライナーノーツ(詩)を朗読。アメリカの歴史を辿る音楽を、ダヴンズの演奏と詩でお届けします。ブックレットには数多くの写真も掲載しております。

Pianist Lara Downes has rightly been getting attention for her diverse recordings, which range from straight classical programs to jazz and ragtime to concept albums of various kinds. This album has a stated idea: it is a musical portrait of America, something that has been attempted by many musicians and ensembles. As such, it offers an impressively varied tapestry, including pop, classical, jazz, several Latin strands, and more. Yet, as so often on the best releases, there is a second idea running in counterpoint to the main one. This Land is a chance for those who havent heard this remarkable pianist in person to experience what some of her concerts are like, at least those that arent given over to the promotion of a specific album. She has the ability to find unusual pieces with something to say, put them together with popular pieces that most listeners know, and mix the whole into convincing segues. A pianistic rendering of Paul Simons America is a natural for this project, but it is followed unexpectedly by Adéihozhdílzin, a work by Navajo composer Michael Begay, and then by two very different folk song treatments. Persian-American composer Kian Ravaeis Variations on This Land Is Your Land begin straightforwardly and later introduce various elements on unease, while the folk song 900 Miles (actually, it may be Hedy Wests take on it, 500 Miles, that is rendered here) returns to simplicity, with an ideal distillation of the strain of nostalgia that is such a big part of the American character. Downes is extraordinarily adept at designing an appealing program that includes challenging elements, and she has perhaps never done it better than here. An added bonus for online listeners is the inclusion of the booklet notes in spoken form; this is something that other performers might adopt. It is good to see this visionary artist appearing in the catalog of the Pentatone label, and it is hoped that this will bring her wider exposure beyond the U.S. ~ James Manheim
