From its nude cover photos to the presence of assorted Doobie Brothers/Steely Dan/California rock session musicians, 1979's HARD TIMES FOR LOVERS just screams tasty late-'70s lifestyle music. If you're looking for the folkie Judy of the early '60s, you won't find her here. However, dated though it sounds in spots, HARD TIMES FOR LOVERS is nowhere near the travesty Collins' folkie-diehard fans claim it is. Collins' voice is typically strong, and it meshes with the smooth arrangements quite well. The gently loping country-rock title track and a stellar reading of Randy Newman's "Marie"--one of the few Newman covers which gets to the cynicism at the heart of so many of his songs--are magnificent, and her nuanced interpretation of Stephen Sondheim's "I Remember Sky" is among her finest vocal performances. HARD TIMES FOR LOVERS demands a re-evaluation.
