Viva Tu

ボブ・マーリーやクラッシュを継ぐレベル・ミュージックのカリスマ、マヌ・チャオの新たなスタジオ・アルバムが到着。人生賛歌のファースト・シングル「Viva Tu」、ウィリー・ネルソンとのコラボ「Heaven's Bad Day」ほか、マヌ・チャオのかわらぬ熱さとやさしさにあふれた全13曲。
マヌ・チャオはパリで生まれ育ち、パンク・ロックの影響を受け80年代なかばにバンド活動を開始、87年に結成したミクスチャー・バンド、マノ・ネグラでブレイクし世界的に光を浴びた。マノ・ネグラで4枚のアルバムを残した後ソロへと転じ、リリースを重ねレベル・ミュージックの第一人者としての地位を確立した。『Viva Tu』はマヌ・チャオのソロ・アーティストとしての5枚目のスタジオ・アルバムとなる。前作『La Radiolina』のあと、マヌ・チャオは何年ものあいだ世界中を旅しながら、町のライヴハウスや小さなフェスでステージに立ち、ときには道端や軒先で演奏し、オーディエンスと出会い歌を届け続けてきた。「Viva Tu」は人生と連帯のセレブレーションの歌。全ての仲間たちへの愛を表現したもの。自分自身をありのままに受け入れることを説いている。「Sao Paulo Motoboy」においてはトラックや渋滞の合間を縫いながら街中を駆けまわるストリートの騎士たちの笑いと夢、勇敢さに思いを寄せている。「Heaven's Bad Day」はウィリー・ネルソンとのコラボレーション。「Tu Te Vas」はフランス人シンガー/ラッパーのレティをフィーチャーしている。

Viva Tu finds Manu Chao at exactly the same spot as La Radiolina -- or any of his solo albums, for that matter -- belittling the fact that 17 years have passed since his last studio outing. Once again, this is a set of simple, immediate, and extremely catchy tunes, constructed from bits and pieces of sonic collages that blend electronic loops with acoustic instrumentation, rhythm accents from multiple cultures (albeit with a predominantly Mediterranean and Ibero-American flavor), lyrics sung in half-a-dozen languages, and messages that intermingle personal and sociopolitical issues. And yet, no new Manu Chao album will be able to match the impact and novelty factor of Clandestino, a veritable lighting-in-a-bottle moment for Latin music at the turn of the century. That being said, while sticking to the same old formula, the warm and engaging songs of Viva Tu sound positively inspired and refreshing. A most welcome return to form for the French-Spanish globetrotting troubadour. ~ Mariano Prunes
