ザ・シックスティーンが歌う世俗合唱作品集!

1979年にハリー・クリストファーズが設立し、それ以来世界最高クラスの合唱団として活動し続けている英国合唱界の至宝、ザ・シックスティーン。
2024年に没後100周年記念を迎えるイギリス系アイルランド人作曲家、チャールズ・ヴィリアーズ・スタンフォード(1852-1924)のアニヴァーサリー・リリースは、多数の世界初録音作品を含む、パートソング(合唱)、パストラル(牧歌)、フォークソング(民謡)集。
70歳を超えたハリー・クリストファーズは「人生の大半を宗教音楽の演奏と録音に費やしてきた」と言いますが、2023年には世俗音楽だけをテーマとしたアルバム「セイレーンの歌(イギリスのパートソング集)」(COR16198)をリリースし、英グラモフォン誌では『エディターズ・チョイス』に選ばれ、「これほど美しく歌われたイギリスのアカペラ音楽のアルバムを見つけるには、かなり遠くまで行かなければならないだろう。」と絶賛されました。
「セイレーンの歌」には、スタンフォードのもっとも有名な合唱作品の1つ「青い鳥」を含む「8つのパートソング Op.119」が収録されていましたが、今回のアルバムではそこから更に拡張し、アイルランド民謡協会の設立に非常に熱心であったというスタンフォードの民謡や牧歌、パートソングの美しく情熱的な合唱作品を、ザ・シックスティーンの豊かな歌声でお贈りします。

Conductor Harry Christophers and his ensemble The Sixteen (here slightly bulked up to 18 singers) seem to have undertaken championing this small-choir music of Charles Villiers Stanford out of genuine enthusiasm; the music is a far cry from the large choral works for which Stanford is genuinely known. This release follows on an earlier album of Stanford partsongs, and this new one, appearing in conjunction with the centenary of Stanfords death in 2024, made classical best-seller lists in the summer of that year. The partsongs are the best thing again here; the texts are by Mary Elizabeth Coleridge (great-grandniece of Samuel Taylor Coleridge), and the settings -- with harmonic complexities to rival those in Stanfords larger works -- are impressively sensitive. Both albums might be adduced in support of the contention that the partsong is the most unjustly neglected genre of 19th century music. Sample "The Haven," whose economical six lines of poetry are matched by marvelously subtle colors. The rest of the material, consisting of two sets of Irish folksong settings and one group of Six Elizabethan Pastorals (the texts of these are by various writers), are catchy rather than sublime, but everything is listenable and fun, a word not often applied to Stanfords music. Stick around for the bonus track, titled "Emers Farewell to Cucullain," otherwise known as the Londonderry Air or, for U.S. listeners, Danny Boy. This album provides impressive new testimony to the ability of The Sixteen to deliver convincing performances in a variety of idioms. ~ James Manheim
