フランス文化の転機ともいうべき16世紀、ラテン語ではなくフランス語で高雅な韻文を吟じ得ることを数々の名作で実証し歴史に名を残した七星詩派(プレイアード派)の一人ピエール・ド・ロンサール(1524-1585)。その作品は多声音楽の技芸を追求していた同時代の音楽家たちから注目されるにとどまらず、過去の文化遺産の魅力にヨーロッパ人が改めて開眼した19世紀以降も多くの作曲家が関心を示し、歌曲化してきました。フランスの老舗古楽集団ドゥース・メモワールは詩人生誕500年に寄せ、多様なレパートリーを広い音域にわたり緻密な表現で歌いこなす名歌手マルク・モイヨンと共に、ロンサール作品を歌詞にした声楽作品を集めた2枚組アルバムを制作。ドゥース・メモワールは詩人存命中から活躍をみせた作曲家たちの多声シャンソン、モイヨンは19世紀以降の歌曲を演奏しています。Disc 1ではリラの弓奏に合わせて朗読された詩に続けて複数作曲家による同一詩に基づく作例が続き、Disc 2ではグノーやグヴィなど19世紀半ばの作例からラヴェルやフランス六人組の頃まで、ピアノ伴奏歌曲の多様さを聴き比べられます。モイヨンの頼れる共演者アンヌ・ル・ボゼクが奏でるピアノは、透明感とニュアンスに富んだ美音を響かせる1905年製プレイエル。中世音楽とピアノ音楽の両方に抜群の実績を持つ録音技師ジャン=マルク・レネも、さまざまな古楽器の味わいを歌唱の魅力と共に克明に伝えてくれます。16世紀と19世紀の名画をカラー掲載したブックレットも充実、文学側からの関心も満たす内容になっています(仏英独語)。

Perhaps this release will be a little more accessible to francophone listeners who still grow up reading the poetry of Pierre de Ronsard, the 500th anniversary of whose birth was celebrated in 2024. However, there is much here of interest to anyone who likes the Renaissance French chanson, Romantic song, or both. This Alpha label release is really two albums in one, with the historical performance group Doulce Memoire recording a selection of 16th century settings of Ronsards poems on the first part of the program and bari-tenor Marc Mauillon and pianist Anne Le Bozec rendering the French songs on the second half. Yet the whole thing is unified by the poetry of Ronsard, which has a free but classic quality that was conceived with musical setting in mind and has appealed to composers old and new. Perhaps the first part is the most interesting, for it allows listeners to hear something very rarely experienced, at least not to this extent. Some of Ronsards poems were so popular that they were set by many composers; he is comparable to Goethe in this regard. Mignonne, allon(s) voir si la rose, perhaps the most popular at all, is represented by no fewer than five settings here, plus related other songs and some nifty lute improvisations. In these multiple settings, one can hear composers dealing with the idea of genuine text setting in a way that shows just how cutting-edge this music was. Sample the settings of Bonjour, mon coeur, where they had to wrestle with how to treat the bouncy title line. Orlande de Lassus, the greatest chanson composer of the age, offers a harmonically unstable opening that propels the music into an answering passage of complex polyphony while other composers try different solutions. The 19th and 20th century settings, one of them (by Pauline Viardot) also setting the Bonjour mon coeur text, take on new depth in this context and offer pieces by lesser-known figures such as Theodore Gouvy, a specialist in Ronsard, as well as Ravel and Ibert. Lovers of historical pianos may want the album for the penetrating 1905 Pleyel model played by Le Bozec alone. A unique release that gets deeper into the relationship between text and music than most other song recitals do. ~ James Manheim
