エルヴィス・プレスリー 故郷メンフィスでの録音を完全網羅したコレクション『Memphis』(5枚組 CD BOX)

今回発売される『Memphis』(メンフィス)は、この夏で70周年を迎えるサン・スタジオでの初期のセッションから、グレイスランドのジャングル・ルームで行われた最後のレコーディングまで、111曲にわたりエルヴィス・プレスリーの姿をとらえている。エルヴィスの権威として知られるエルンスト・ヨルゲンセンがプロデュースを手がけ、レアなアーカイヴ音源や、グラミー賞受賞歴のある音楽歴史家ロバート・ゴードンが書き下ろしたライナーノーツも収められている。
収録曲のうちサン時代を除く88曲は、グラミー賞を4回受賞したマット・ロス・スパングがオーバーダブを削ぎ落とし、エルヴィスがスタジオで聴いた生音だけが聞こえる状態にしたのち、新たにミキシングが施されている。彼の仕事によって、エルヴィスの「ザ・メンフィス・ボーイズ」との直感的なケミストリーから、彼がスタックスでのセッションでバッキング・シンガーの声を軸にヴォーカル・フレージングを繊細に組み立てていく様子、あるいはジャングル・ルームで行われた最後のセッションであらわにした喜びなど、多くの新たな発見を生み出している。それら全体を通じて、エルヴィスの隣で音を聞いているような感覚を味わうことができる。
エルヴィスにとっての芸術性という部分で極めて重要な役割を果たしてきた永遠の故郷=メンフィスとの間にある絆に新たな洞察を与える作品だ。
