Flydaddy Records released Succour: The Terrascope Benefit Album in 1996 to assist the British music magazine Ptolemaic Terrascope. The double-disc set includes 35 songs from some of indie rock's most influential and experimental artists, including Palace, Bevis Frond, Magic Hour, Strapping Fieldhands, Cul de Sac, Bardo Pond, Robyn Hitchcock, and Flying Saucer Attack, among others. The artists rushed to support the magazine, which for years had been reporting on the kind of underground music that mainstream press rarely touched. The collection begins with the ambient and frantic "Dartania" by the Linus Pauling Quartet. That is followed by the piano pop of the Green Pajamas and their track, "Deadly Nightshade." The diversity of styles throughout makes this compilation full of surprises. R.E.M.'s Peter Buck collaborates with Scott McCaughey and others on "Hate Me More," a subdued and soulful epic. The Olivia Tremor Control offer the kind of playful and cerebral track, "The Ships," that has made the band so notable. Ghost checks in with an ambitious, organ-based track. All of the songs on Succour: The Terrascope Benefit Album were previously unreleased, making the collection all the more collectible. ~ Stephen Cramer
