ヘンデルはドイツのハレで生まれ、ハンブルクでオルガニスト兼作曲家として活動した後、メディチ家の招きでイタリアに渡ってイタリア語のオラトリオやオペラで成功を収めました。その後はイギリスに移り、1714年にハノーファー選帝侯がイギリス王ジョージ1世として即位すると、王のために「水上の音楽」を作曲しました。1723年に王室礼拝堂作曲家となり、1727年にはイギリス国籍を取得して「ジョージ・フレデリック・ハンドル」と名乗ります。1740年代以降には「王宮の花火の音楽」や英語によるオラトリオ「メサイア」などの名作を作曲するかたわら、オルガンやチェンバロの名演奏家として、亡くなるまで栄誉を保ちました。このアルバムには、彼の伝記の朗読(英語)とともにイタリア、イギリス、各々の時代に書かれた名作からの抜粋が収録されています。
