アデル、The xx、ミツキといった大物アーティストとの共演や、サンファ、キング・クルールといったアーティストにもリミックスされアーティストはもちろんメディアもこぞって絶賛するUK新世代の才媛シンガーソングライター、ニルファー・ヤンヤ(Nilufer Yanya)が〈Ninja Tune〉へ移籍を果たし最新アルバム『My Method Actor』をリリースする。
本作『My Method Actor』の制作中、ニルファーはクリエイティブ・パートナーであるプロデューサー/マルチ奏者のウィルマ・アーチャー(スーダン・アーカイブス/MFドゥーム/セレステ)とスタジオに入った。彼女はセカンド・アルバム『PAINLESS』に伴うツアーを1年間経験する中で、作品やレコード会社、プライベートなどで過渡期を迎えていた。まさにそれは『My Method Actor』において、人生のある部分から別の部分への移動というアイデアを多く扱っている。本アルバムの種は2023年初めに蒔かれたが、芽が出始めたのはその年の春だった。曲が出来始めると、ヤンヤとアーチャーは世間から身を隠した。「このアルバムは、その点で最も強烈なアルバム」とヤンヤは言う。彼らはロンドン、ウェールズ、イーストボーンにまたがる小さなセッションで作曲とレコーディングを行った。このレコードの雰囲気には、創造的なエネルギーの繭のようなものを感じることができる。親密さを感じさせながら、映画のような広がりで全体を包み込み、最終的に彼らが作り上げた小さな世界にあなたを招き入れ、その秘密を提供している。
20代後半を迎え、確立されたミュージシャンとしてのアイデンティティと向き合う彼女にとって、楽曲制作は自身の変化や周囲の変化を理解するための重要なツールとなっている。「私にとって、創作は問題解決の一種なの。夢を見るような感覚で、何かがカチッとハマる。それがなぜなのかは説明できないけれど、創造的な脳の奥底から湧き出てくるアイデアなの」。彼女の歌詞は、具体的でありながらも夢のような雰囲気を漂わせ、意味を探求するような奥深さを持つ。時には、まるで過去の自分自身を解き明かそうとしているかのように、楽曲を分析することもある。ヤンヤの楽曲制作は、直感と内省に導かれ、自己発見の旅路を辿っていると言えるだろう。

After releasing and then touring in support of her second album, PAINLESS, Nilufer Yanya found herself not only between albums but between record labels and homes. When she eventually felt ready to start from scratch on a new batch of songs a few months into 2023, she got together with Wilma Archer (Sudan Archives, Celeste), who had contributed to both of her prior LPs, and decided to make it a two-person affair in which they wouldnt so much as ask for feedback from anyone else. (Guests do appear on strings, pedal steel, and drums on a few tracks.) Written and recorded in sessions in London, Eastbourne, and Wales, the resulting My Method Actor -- Yanyas Ninja Tune debut -- is an even more intimate, reflective album than its predecessor. The title was derived from the idea that we act differently around others versus when theres no audience, as well as when we enter different headspaces. Ruminative throughout, My Method Actor dives right into existential questions with the opening line "What are you looking for?" on "Keep On Dancing." A confrontational, mostly acoustic track, it adds throbbing bass, electric guitar, and extra layers of vocals for its more emphatic final third. Yanya keeps searching for answers on the syncopated "Method Actor," with its mix of grungy guitar tones, airy pedal steel, and Shakespearean imagery, then she asks "Was it hard to stay?" on the skittering "Mutations," and she wonders "Do you feel sad?....Do you get mad?" on the ethereal, strings-enhanced "Faiths Late," the closest thing to a chamber R&B ballad in the set. The stripped-down, wobbly final track, "Wingspan," bookends the album with a statement: "Here comes destiny." In tandem with its animated acoustic rhythms and often enigmatic lyrics, My Method Actor is a soft-spoken, probing outing for Yanya, one whose dreamy web of acoustic instruments and electronic accents persistently allures while scrutinizing. ~ Marcy Donelson

ATOでの前作『Painless』も素晴らしい出来映えだったロンドン出身のシンガー・ソングライターが、なんとニンジャ・チューンに移籍してサード・アルバムをリリース。前作に伴うツアーを経験するなかで彼女は公私にわたる大きな過渡期を迎えていたそうで、環境を一新したうえでクリエイティヴ・パートナーのウィルマ・アーチャーとスタジオ入りしたことが本作の豊かな成果を引き寄せたようだ。ルーツにあるトルコ音楽やコンテンポラリーなR&B、90年代のオルタナ・サウンドを下地にしたアレンジは、引き続きギタリストとしての側面も力強く際立たせたもの。翳りのある歌心も魅力的で、今回もやっぱり最高!
