Chris dEon first earned attention for kaleidoscopic art-pop/R&B releases that incorporated elements of far-flung genres such as new age, video game soundtracks, juke, and jungle. He gradually focused on less song-driven works, releasing a multitude of Music for Keyboards mixtapes as well as several challenging but thrilling Trios works. 2021s Rhododendron, his first release on Hausu Mountain, explored the Baroque influences present on earlier recordings, presenting some of his clearest, friendliest, and most melodic compositions. Leviathan continues in the same vein, even including a fourth part of the piece "Rhododendron." The tracks all utilize lush yet dry MIDI textures, and they often have rhythms that suggest the influence of R&B productions from the 2000s. A few have unique flourishes, such as the mock guitar, horn, and accordion solos of "Heat Wave." "Collar" comes closest to sounding like a 60s Baroque pop melody. A few songs have melodies that are difficult to tell apart, but dEon isnt a stranger to writing variations on a theme, with his Music for Keyboards releases. Best of all, he sneaks in a remix by his jungle project Kallisti as a hidden bonus track at the end. ~ Paul Simpson
