ザ・ナショナルのメンバーとして、また映画音楽やクラシックの世界で活躍するBryce Dessner(ブライス・デスナー)のソニー・クラシカルからのデビュー作『Solos』

Bryce Dessner(ブライス・デスナー)は1976年アメリカ・オハイオ州シンシナティ生まれ。幼いころよりフルート、10代からはクラシックギターを学び、エール大学で学士および修士号を取得。その後、オルタナティヴ・ロックバンド=ザ・ナショナルを結成。ギタリスト、ソングライター、アレンジャーとして成功を収める。また、イニャリトゥ監督『レヴェナント:蘇えりし者』の音楽を坂本龍一と共に手掛けるなど、映画音楽にも進出。その他、フィリップ・グラス、ジョニー・グリーンウッド、ボン・イヴェール、スティーヴ・ライヒ、ポール・サイモン、ブルース・スプリングスティーン、スフィアン・スティーヴンス、テイラー・スウィフト、トム・ヨーク等の多彩なアーティスト達とのコラボレーションも精力的に行っている。またブライス・デスナーは多作なクラシック作曲家でもあり、グラミー賞も受賞。その作品は親密な室内楽作品やソロ楽器演奏者向けの小品から、フルオーケストラのスコアや協奏曲まで多岐にわたる。サンフランシスコ交響楽団の8人の共同パートナーの1人としての役割に加え、現在チューリッヒ・トーンハレ管弦楽団のクリエイティブ・チェアー、ロンドンのサウスバンク・センターおよびフランクフルト放送交響楽団のアーティスト・イン・レジデンスを務めている。主な新作には、2024年1月にアリス・サラ・オットとチューリッヒ・トーンハレ管弦楽団によって初演され、現在国際的に演奏されているピアノ協奏曲、カティア&マリエル・ラベックとロンドン・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団による2台のピアノのための協奏曲初演、そしてヴァイオリン協奏曲はペッカ・クーシストによって国際的に初演され演奏されました。デスナーの人気の作品は、ロサンゼルス・フィルハーモニック、ニューヨーク・フィルハーモニック、クリーブランド管弦楽団、フランス放送フィルハーモニー管弦楽団、ロンドン・フィルハーモニア管弦楽団、サンフランシスコ交響楽団など、世界中の一流のオーケストラによって演奏されている。

Bryce Dessner, founder and guitarist of the indie rock band The National, has arguably had the greatest success of any of the figures who have attempted the jump from rock to classical concert music, reaching greater heights with each new release. He was signed to the major Sony Classical label, and now, with the album of solo music promised by the title, he attracts major guest stars. Dessners method on this album is an unusual one, and he deserves credit for this; various composers have written solo music, and various ones have written music for a variety of soloists, but to combine these two takes some rigor. One of the soloists is Dessner himself, who appears on a pair of guitar pieces. Most numerous are the works by Katia Labeque of the celebrated Katia & Marielle Labeque piano duo; her works are especially meditative in tone. The rest of the soloists are mostly younger artists: cellist Anastasia Kobekina, percussionist Colin Currie, violinist Pekka Kuusisto (in the most ambitious work of the lot, the three-movement Ornament and Crime), harpist Lavinia Meijer, and violist Nadia Sirota. Dessner writes idiomatically for all the instruments (Meijers harp in On a Wire is especially impressive in this regard), and that is quite an accomplishment for someone who is still basically a newcomer to classical concert music. Whether his relatively simple textures carry the personal overtones he describes will be for individual listeners to judge, and it would be interesting to know whether those who come from rock backgrounds would answer the question differently from those with a primarily classical background. The album was recorded at several different locations, but a substantial editing and mastering staff has largely knitted it together sonically.
