トロントを拠点とするシンガーソングライターで、浮遊感のある、気だるいベッドルーム・ポップが特徴的なHomeshakeことPeter Sagarがニュー・アルバム『Horsie』を自身のレーベル〈Shhoamkee〉からリリース!
2024年3月リリースの『CD Wallet』に続き、『Horsie』は2024年のセカンド・アルバムで、合計7作目となる。
トロントの自宅スタジオで作曲・レコーディングされた本作は、ライブ・パフォーマンスへの復帰に対するSagarの複雑な思いが綴られた全12曲を収録。
孤独や不安と向き合い、ツアーという文脈の中でそれらのテーマを検証している。今作ではFour TetやMy Bloody Valentineといったアーティストや、D'AngeloやSadeのリズム形式、Ry Cooderのアンビエント・アメリカーナなどに影響を受けた様々なテクスチャーを採用。お馴染みのSP-404とともにエレクトリック・ギターも多用されているが、基本となる機材はEnsoniq EPSとRoland Juno 60。「LESS IS MORE(少ないことの豊かさ)」という哲学を貫き、Sagaは1つの地点から次の地点への最もシンプルなルートを見出している。

Horsie is Homeshakes second release of 2024, following the unexpectedly guitar-heavy, slowcore-influenced CD Wallet by just a few months. For the most part, Peter Sagar switches back to the sparse, semi-electronic bedroom pop of past Homeshake efforts, continuing to express themes of anxiety and loneliness. In this case, the songs are written about Sagars mixed feelings regarding his return to touring after the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily closed venues. The lyrics describe daydreaming during endless drives between gigs, phone communication with his partner back home, and nostalgic memories. The songs feature airy guitars, mellow keyboards, stiff drum machines, and soft, lilting vocals, and generally inhabit a bummed-out comfort zone. A few traces of CD Wallets blown-out guitar distortion resurface, generally during brief interludes at the end of tracks like "Horsie" and "Nothing 2 See" as well as the deflated shoegaze of "Ice Tea." He doesnt seem to be in the mood to revisit the R&B/pop hooks of albums like Midnight Snack or Helium, though. Sagar pitches his vocals down on the drowsy but pleasant "Blunt Talk," and remains in the same downer vibe even when his voice is left unaltered. "Believe" adds a little bit of Steely Dan-style sophistication, and "Empty Lot" drifts away into a low-tide ambient drone. Other than a few moments like these, Horsie is mainly variations on the familiar Homeshake style, which means that its soothing if youre in a glum mood. ~ Paul Simpson
