6年の歳月を経て「24の前奏曲とフーガ」を完成させた直後に突然この世を去った作曲家マット・ディブル。クラシック、ジャズ、ポップスの要素が溶け合う彼の作品は多くの人々に愛されていました。この作品はJ.S.バッハやショスタコーヴィチの伝統を継承するものですが、ディブルはここにジャズのコードを採り入れることで新風を吹き込んでいます。各々のタイトルの最後に加えられた「3」の意味は不明ですが、旋律の多くは3度の音程が用いられており、またほとんどのフーガの最後の音程は次の前奏曲の最初の部分と一致するなどの規則性も認められます。
はからずもディブルの追悼盤となったこのアルバムの録音に取り組んだピアニスト、フレディ・ケンプはディブルと直接の面識はなかったものの、彼の作品の愛好者の一人であり「マットが最も注意を払っていた価値観の一部が、私の価値観と一致しているように感じます」と語るケンプならではの見事な解釈で全曲を聴かせます。
