Sounds pleasant enough, but Greenes songs and production are so placid and unbothered by anything remotely emotional that its hard to imagine the album causing any kind of reaction. Maybe a nagging feeling that one is late for a dentists appointment, but thats about it. Granted, it does do the mellow-to-a-fault thing very well; the mood remains unbroken throughout. If one were to play the album for a sleeping baby, for example, the youngster would likely never stir. The production relies on the kind of loping rhythms, gently squelchy basslines, and washy synths that made his early work enticing to those worn out by over-caffeinated post-punk band and thudding rock revivalists. Unfortunately, now that approach seems reductive and bland, especially when Greene hasnt injected it with any shimmering melodies and sweetly sung hooks. It feels AI-generated and lazy, and even when he does try to whip up some excitement, like on the synth pop-inspired "The Hardest Part," he dulls the hooks by stashing them behind smudge-proof glass. Its too bad, because when hes not on autopilot, Greene can come up with some exciting and interesting work -- 2003s Paracosm is one of the great underrated albums of the 2010s -- but hes stuck in a rut here and seems just fine with it. ~ Tim Sendra
