魔法学校＜Lilac Smoke Marbled Vinyl＞

待望の2ndアルバム『魔法学校』が〈Brainfeeder〉よりリリース!!

2023年7月にフライング・ロータス率いる〈Brainfeeder〉と契約した長谷川白紙による待望のニューアルバム『魔法学校』がリリース。
〈Brainfeeder〉移籍後初となり長谷川にとっては約4年8ヶ月ぶりのフルアルバムとなる本作には、レーベル契約発表時にリリースされ、ルイス・コールやサム・ゲンデルらとのコラボレーションでもお馴染みの実力派ジャズ・ベーシスト、サム・ウィルクス (Sam Wilkes)が参加したシングル「口の花火」のほか、KID FRESINOとの共演曲「行つてしまつた」や、花譜への提供曲「蕾に雷」のセルフカバー、挾間美帆がホーンアレンジで参加した「恐怖の星」など全12曲が収録される。
アルバムアナウンス時に解禁された先行シングル「ボーイズ・テクスチャー」は長谷川が2023年、パリ・ファッションウィークでのnoir kei ninomiyaのSpring/Summer 2024のショーのために書き下ろした曲が元になっており、ギターで西田修大が参加。ミックスは浦本雅史、マスタリングはビョーク (Bjork) なども手がけるヘバ・カドリー (Heba Kadry) が担当している。
これまで自身の容姿に対し嫌悪感を持ち、鏡や写真に自身が映る事にも常に恐怖を抱いてきた長谷川が、先日公開されたアーティスト写真のように、それに向き合った曲となっている。
コロナ禍を挟み制作された本アルバムは、前作『エアにに』で切り拓かれた新時代のポップサウンドをさらに撹乱させ、音楽史に新たな1ページを記すかような意欲作となっている。

Beginning with the release of their 2017 debut EP on netlabel Maltine Records, Hakushi Hasegawa has established a truly distinctive sound mixing jazzy sophistication, whirlwind breakbeats, and giddy yet tender melodies, somehow finding a balance between chaotic excess and direct expression. Appearances on virtual events hosted by Porter Robinson and Flying Lotus gained the artist an expanded international audience, and Hasegawa became the first Japanese signee to FlyLos Brainfeeder label. Along with reissues of 2018s Somoku Hodo EP and 2019s Air Ni Ni, two of Hasegawas most acclaimed releases, Brainfeeder delivered second full-length Mahōgakkō in 2024. Every bit as complex, overwhelming, and exciting as their previous efforts, Mahōgakkō incorporates the impossibly fast rhythms of breakcore and singeli into finely tuned art-pop songs with clear, smooth vocals. Opener "Departed" is harsh and pummelling yet bursting with glee, and "Gone" elevates its most intense passage with breathless raps by KID FRESINO, while "Mouth Flash (Kuchinohanabi)" winds catchy melodies and vocal harmonies through a storm of interlocked drums. Gliding strings and delicate pianos frame the albums lighter selections, "Repeal (Tekkai)" and "Forbidden Thing (Kimmotsu)," while "The Blossom and the Thunder" appropriately juxtaposes lush beauty with jarring interruptions and tripped-out griminess. "KYŌFUNOHOSHI" is an ecstatic tornado of brass fanfares, airhorns, mutated trap beats, and explosive, punishing drums. Its miles away from the childlike avant-folk of "Boys Texture," featuring unhinged backing vocals that somehow equally bring to mind Playboi Carti and early Animal Collective, yet both feel like they couldve only come from the same mind. Like Hasegawas previous efforts, Mahōgakkō is an inventive, genre-obliterating release that demonstrates the artists mastery of hyper-technical yet exhilarating songcraft. ~ Paul Simpson

ブレインフィーダー契約後では初のアルバムであり、オリジナル作としては実に4年8か月ぶりとなるフル・アルバム。そんな待望の一枚は、西田修大がギターで参加した先行カット"ボーイズ・テクスチャー"をはじめ、KID FRESINOのマイク捌きが凄まじい"行つてしまつた"、挾間美帆のホーン・アレンジで馬場智章らが演奏する"恐怖の星"、花譜に提供した"蕾に雷"のセルフ・カヴァーなどいつにも増してトピックは多め。ビートの奔流と多様な輪郭の声が飛び交う緻密で快感的なサウンドはより親しみやすくもなった印象で、とはいえ落ち着いてはいられない聴き心地の創造しい騒々しさは抜群に唯一無二。傑作!
