オーストリアの作曲家、エルンスト・クルシェネクの世界初録音となるセレナーデ!

本アルバムに収められた世界初録音となるオーストリアの作曲家、エルンスト・クルシェネクの初期のセレナーデは、1921年7月31日、「現代音楽芸術を擁護するドナウエッシンゲン室内楽祭」で初演されました。この音楽祭は、やがてドナウエッシンゲン音楽祭として知られるようになり、現在では世界最古の専門音楽祭のひとつとなっていいます。クルシェネクの作品は、多種多彩であり、初期の作品は、師であるフランツ・シュレーカーのスタイルである後期ロマン主義音楽の伝統にのっとっており、その後、バルトークや新ウィーン楽派に影響され、無調による作曲、パリを訪れストラヴィンスキーやフランス六人組と親交を結んだことから、新古典主義音楽やジャズの音楽様式にも影響されています。カップリングには、ブラームスの孫弟子として後期ロマン主義の伝統的な作曲技法と旋律美を貫いた作曲家ハンス・ガル、現代のポーランド楽壇を代表する巨匠クシシュトフ・ペンデレツキの作品が組み合わされています。
23歳の若さでブレーメン・ドイツ・カンマーフィルの首席クラリネット奏者に就任し、ウィーン・フィルやベルリン・フィルへの客演も多い名クラリネット奏者、キリアン・ヘロルドを筆頭に多くの共演を重ねてきた4人の名手達が、これら新古典主義時代に書かれた作品の真髄に迫ります。

The serenade in the hands of composers of Mozarts time was occasional music, possibly even intended for performance outdoors. Even if Mozart himself invested greater heft in the form, there was lightness in his renditions. The 20th century, speaking broadly, isnt a period characterized by musical lightness, but try out this group of clarinet chamber pieces, two of which use the Serenade title. They are true serenades, even the Clarinet Quartet by Krzysztof Penderecki, which does not bear the title. Lyricism figures in some Penderecki works, but seldom has it been as pure as in the final "Abschied" ("Farewell") movement of this quartet. Part of the enjoyment here comes from the veteran chamber performers featured, two of whom, violinist Florian Donderer and cellist Tanja Tetzlaff, are married. There is even humor in these pieces, and they catch it; sample the fifth movement Allegretto of the Serenade in B major, Op. 4. The Serenade for clarinet, violin, and cello, Op. 93, of Hans Gal, is a rare work that may have been recorded just once before. A real delight that just might make new fans for these 20th century composers. ~ James Manheim
