An independent visionary from Glasgow, Bill Wells has created a unique post-jazz vocabulary informed by improvisation, soundtracks, and avant-garde practices. Incorrect Practice is a sleepy foray into elegiac atmospheres, sounding in parts like dusted-off soundtracks from the early '60s, only transformed into a late-night contemporary music -- a distinctly modern edge soaked in blue nostalgia. Led primarily by Wells' pensive piano and samples, the album features Stevie Jackson from Belle & Sebastian on harmonica, Robert Henderson providing melodic tints on trumpet, and the late Lindsay Cooper on tuba (not to be confused with the British avant-garde bassoonist of the same name). Appearing on the Steven Pastel curated label Geographic, Incorrect Practice comes drenched in the homespun intimacy that the label favors. ~ Skip Jansen
