My Light, My Destroyer

前作が高い評価を博したNYのシンガーソングライター、カサンドラ・ジェンキンス。これまで以上に幅広いサウンド・パレットを駆使したデッド・オーシャンズ移籍第一弾、自身3枚目となるアルバム『マイ・ライト、マイ・デストロイヤー』をリリース。

夜空そのもののように、『My Light, My Destroyer』の世界は常に広がっている。新しいレーベル、Dead OceansからリリースされるCassandra Jenkinsのサード・アルバムは、ギター主体のインディ・ロック、ニューエイジ、ソフィスティ・ポップ、ジャズなど、これまで以上に幅広いサウンド・パレットを駆使し、新たな境地に達することを約束する。その中心にあるのは、自身の宇宙を構成するクオークやクェーサーに対するJenkinsの好奇心であり、彼女はフィールド・レコーディングと、とらえどころのない、ユーモラスで、破滅的で、告白的な詩的リリシズムを融合させることで、アルバムの13曲の豊潤さをさらに深める錬金術的な作業を行っている。
2年間にわたる前作『An Overview on Phenomenal Nature』のツアーを終えた直後、Jenkinsは次のアルバムのレコーディングに取りかかった。「燃え尽きて枯渇しているところから始まったので、セッション後の数ヶ月は、作ったばかりのレコードが好きではないことを受け入れるのに苦労した。だからやり直した」と彼女は告白する。彼女の親しい音楽仲間たちが再び集まり、プロデューサー、エンジニア、ミキサーのAndrew Lappin(L'Rain、Slauson Malone 1)がボードの後ろにいる中、Jenkinsは以前のセッションを脇に置き、その灰から『My Light, My Destroyer』を作り始めた。
『My Light, My Destroyer』は1年をかけて制作されたが、収録される13曲の中には、Jenkinsのノートに何年も眠っていた曲もある。Tom Pettyの爽やかなフォーク・ロックの古典主義、Annie LennoxやNeilYoungのようなソングライターの作品、彼女がハイスクールの時に聴いていたCD(Radioheadの『The Bends』、The Breeders、PJ Harvey、Pavement)、DavidBowieの『Blackstar』など、アルバムの制作中、彼女の頭の中にはサウンドの参照点も存在し、Anne Carson、Maggie Nelson、Rebecca Solnitのような作家や、David Bermanの作品などからの影響もあった。また『My Light, My Destroyer』は、前作のような孤独な作品ではなく、グループとしての作品である。
PalehoundのEl Kempner、Hand HabitsのMeg Duffy、Isaac Eiger(元Strange Ranger)、Katie Von Schleicher、Zoe Brecher(Hushpuppy)、Daniel McDowell(AmenDunes)、プロデューサー兼プレイヤーのJosh Kaufman(前作のプロデューサー)らが参加。Jenkinsの友人である映画監督/俳優/ジャーナリストのHaileyBenton Gatesも、「Hayley」のタイトルを提案した。

Cassandra Jenkins 2021 release, An Overview on Phenomenal Nature, was a quietly dazzling and impressionistic set that bubbled up into the indie mainstream enough to land on several prominent year-end lists. The critical accolades were justly earned, and fans responded to her glowing, intimate songs about loss, healing, and the connections between nature and humanity. But with greater public attention comes increased pressure, and over the next two years she struggled to develop the follow-up album she wanted to make. A nearly finished version of it was scrapped and then re-recorded in a wild two-week burst with producer Andrew Lappin, resulting in this 13-song song set released on Dead Oceans. Although more experimental and stylistically varied, My Light, My Destroyer plays like an emotional sequel to An Overview, exploring similar human themes from different angles. Loneliness, aging, and the exhausting search for hope propel "Clams Casino," a midtempo standout with a punchy Aimee Mann feel. Jenkins zooms between the micro and the macro on "Aurora, IL," describing her frustration at losing tour dates to a COVID diagnosis while philosophically musing about William Shatners 2021 space flight aboard billionaire Jeff Bezos rocket. As a lyricist, she is both soulful and observant, describing her inner and outer worlds with abstract poignancy, and at times even playfulness. "The walls are blushing landlord pink, the dishes pile up, my heart sinks," she half-whispers on the 90s-inspired alt-rocker "Petco." Even if the tempos never quite pick up, there is plenty of sonic variance throughout the set with intriguing field-recorded interludes and instrumentals, the most endearing of which is "Betelgeuse," which features a candid stargazing conversation between Jenkins and her mother. The dreamy "Delphinium Blue" is another highlight, falling somewhere between the art-pop of Laurie Anderson and the Blue Niles cool sophisti-pop. Her previous album was a breakout success for good reason, but My Light, My Destroyer succeeds in all the right ways, pushing Jenkins songcraft ever forward and expanding her already impressive catalog. ~ Timothy Monger

今なお高い評価を得る2ndアルバムのリリースから早3年。米・名門レーベル＜Dead Oceans＞移籍後第一弾リリースとなる本作は、さらに多彩なメロディを奏でる傑作となりました。彼女のストーリーテリングから始まり、アンビエントサウンドと清廉な歌声が映える《Betelgeuse》～《Omakase》の流れでは今までにない手法を凝らしたことが伺えます。最後のトラック「Hayley」はヴァイオリンとストリングスのみで締め方まで素晴らしい。前作以上に神秘的でメランコリック、今までに感じたことがない陶酔感を覚える1枚です。

幅広いサウンド・パレットを使うことをテーマにNYのシンガー・ソングライターが作り上げたサード・アルバム。聴き手の耳元で歌っているような歌声に1曲目から、はっとさせられる。冒頭に書いた意味では、アンビエント・フォークに90sオルタナやアメリカーナ、さらにはジャズが加わった印象だが、ストイックな音作りと共に全編でクール・ビューティーぶりを見せつける。
