Slow Burn came about when Baby Rose and BadBadNotGood met to see if they would simply pair well for future collaboration. They wrote and recorded a song together, and then another, and continued until this EP was in the can. For spellbinding singer Baby Rose, this followed her second album, 2023s Through and Through. BadBadNotGood had just issued their three-part Mid Spiral series of EPs, the flexible bands first purely instrumental project in roughly a decade. BBNGs Chester Hansen, Alexander Sowinski, and Leland Whitty, multi-instrumentalists whose respective main tools are drums, bass, and saxophone, are augmented here by touring keyboardist and Mid Spiral contributor Felix Fox-Pappas, and are in service to Rose. They play vintage-sounding soul in luminous grayscale that isnt too far off from their work with Charlotte Day Wilson and Samuel T. Herring, and they generally keep it less theatrical than they did on Sour Soul, their LP with Ghostface Killah. The spark between Rose and BBNG is obvious on the first song they made together, "One Last Dance," a wistful and spare ballad that evokes an early-70s Gladys Knight & the Pips cover. BBNG fans unfamiliar with Rose might think that the song is slightly pitched down, but no, the singers voice is uncommonly low and smoky, and the quartet frame it with sensitivity and sophistication. Equally unhurried is "On My Mind," but it hits much harder with cracking drums and blaring organ, complementing Roses need for emotional purgation. Rose sings with a similar sense of urgency on the aptly titled "Slow Burn," the drifting/churning "Weekness," and the uptempo "Its Alright." "Caroline," a sweetly affectionate duet with the elegant Mereba, is an acoustic folk-soul master stroke. ~ Andy Kellman
