ベルトラン・シャマユによるエリック・サティとジョン・ケージの作品を違和感なく結びつけた画期的アルバム《レター(ズ)・トゥ・エリック・サティ》の続編となるもので、ジョン・ケージによるダンス・ソロのために書かれたプリペアド・ピアノのための作品を収録。前アルバムと同じく伝説的レコーディング・スタジオである「ミラヴァル・スタジオ」で録音。

このアルバム《CAGE2》は、ベルトラン・シャマユによるエリック・サティとジョン・ケージの作品を違和感なく結びつけた画期的アルバム《レター(ズ)・トゥ・エリック・サティ》の続編となるもので、前アルバムと同じく伝説的レコーディング・スタジオである「ミラヴァル・スタジオ」で録音されました。《CAGE2》は、ベルトラン シャマユが、ダンサー兼振付師のエロディ・シカールと考案したパフォーマンスのタイトルでもあり、ジョン・ケージが1940年から1945年にかけてプリペアド・ピアノのために作曲した12曲が、《CAGE2》公演時の曲順で収録されています。
ジョン・ケージは、このアルバムの全曲をダンス・ソロのために書きました。アメリカ人ダンサーのシヴィラ・フォート、ヴァレリー・ベティス、ウィルソン・ウィリアムズ、パール・プリマス、ジーン・アードマンなどのダンサーや振付家だけでなく、ジョン・ケージと特に親交の深かったマース・カニンガムのためにも書きました。
本アルバムには、ベルトラン・シャマユによる、プリペアド・ピアノとジョン・ケージの楽曲の起源に関する、詳しいブックレット・ノートが掲載されています。

このアルバムが録音されたミラヴァル・スタジオは、プロヴァンス地方にある古城シャトー・ミラヴァルを1977年にジャック・ルーシェが改装したスタジオで、古くはAC/DC、スティング、ピンク・フロイド、シャーデー、ワム!らが、伝説的なセッションを行いましたが、ここ20年間使用されていませんでした。しかし2021年にブラッド・ピットが名音楽プロデューサーのダミアン・クインタードとパートナーを組み、1970年代当時の貴重な録音機材を保ちつつ、ピットとクインタードが設計した最新のアナログ/デジタルのハイブリッド機材を導入し、この伝説のミラヴァル・スタジオを2022年夏に改修復活させました。このアルバムでもダミアン・クインタードが、レコーディング、編集、マスタリングを手がけています。

John Cage invented the prepared piano, with various materials inserted below and between the strings, and it may yet prove to be his most influential innovation. (Among those who drew on it, one may note, were the easy listening duo of Ferrante & Teicher.) The work most often adduced in exploring the prepared piano and recording it is Cages set of Sonatas and Interludes from 1948. The somewhat earlier works here on Cage2 include Bacchanale (1940), Cages first essay in the genre, and they are not often recorded. Cage remains a figure only slightly less polarizing than politicians, but it is a safe bet that this release by pianist Bertrand Chamayou will be of general interest. Indeed, it landed on classical best-seller lists in the late spring of 2024. The 12 works here are vividly programmatic and accessible to anybody. They include Daughters of the Lonesome Isle, a fine illustration of the influence of Indonesian gamelan music on Cages thinking; the deeply serious In the Name of the Holocaust; and the autobiographical (could any other Cage work be described with this adjective?) A Valentine Out of Season. Pianist Chamayou is excellent, fulfilling the two desiderata in a performance of Cages prepared piano music; his rhythmic foundation is strong, and he brings out the range of sounds fully.
