大ヒットのデビュー作に続く「聖クララ会のシスターたち」からの"平和を届ける"最新作

2020年のデビュー・アルバム『世界の灯』が大ヒットを記録した「アランデル、聖クララ会のシスターたち」によるセカンド・アルバム『My Peace I Give You』がリリースされます。『世界の灯』は8万ユニットと6000万のストリーム数を獲得、イギリスのアルバム・チャートでトップ5に入り、AppleとAmazonでも国際的にトップ入りし、イギリスのスペシャリスト・クラシック・アルバム・チャートで19週連続1位を獲得しました。そしてアメリカ、カナダ、ドイツ、オランダ、スペイン、スウェーデン、オーストリアのテレビ、ラジオや新聞、雑誌などに取り上げられました。数百通にのぼる手紙を受け取った彼女たちが今回のアルバムにつけたタイトルは「私の平和をあなたに届けます(My Peace I Give You)」。彼女たちの音楽は中世の単旋律聖歌と1224年の聖フランチェスコのテキストに、ちょうど800年後となる21世紀のくつろぎの創作を加えたものです。前作『世界の灯』はパンデミックの中で人々が慰めを求めているちょうどその時に届けられましたが、今回のアルバムは難問が突きつけられているこの時期に、聴衆に幸福と調和を受け入れるよう促すものでこれ以上のタイミングはないでしょう。聖クララの真の友であるアッシジの聖フランチェスコによって書かれた『太陽の賛歌(Canticle of The Sun)』はこのアルバムの核であり、私たちがこの地球で見つけることのできる動物から植物、太陽から水、すべての美しさに感謝する手紙です。特に地球温暖化のこの時代に密接に関わっています。

The market for ecclesiastical groups singing chant and contemporary music based on it has to be refreshed from time to time, and this was surely on the mind of Decca executive James Morgan when he approached the Poor Clare Sisters Arundel (or Poor Clares of Arundel, as the album covers have it) in 2019 and suggested recording an album. Morgan and his partner, Juliette Pochin, are also composers, and it was they who provided the easy-on-the-ears melodies, with an unobtrusive orchestral backing, that comprised the bulk of the tracks on the Sisters first album, Light for the World, released in 2020. That album became a best-seller, and in 2024, My Peace I Give You followed. It is cut from much the same cloth as the debut, although this time around, there are a few more traditional pieces of chant in the mix. There are about 15 singers, drawn from the 24 who live at the Poor Clares convent, and they achieve a sound that is impressively homogeneous for amateur singers. From the compositions by Morgan and Pochin to the smooth overall environment, a good deal of engineering went into the transformation of the Clares singing at their own convent to a finished product that, to borrow an advertising slogan from a Dallas classical radio station some years ago, is an ideal "stress eliminator." Those in search of such a thing will find this release ideal, and there are enough of these to have placed the album on classical best-seller lists in the spring of 2024. ~ James Manheim
