Fabric Presents Shygirl

2019年にスタートしたファブリックの新たなミックス・シリーズ、ファブリック・プレゼンツ。イギリスのアンダーグラウンドなダンスミュージック・シーンをリードするシャイガールがキュレイト。

Shygirlというステージ・ネームで知られるBlane Muiseは、イギリスのシンガー、DJ、ラッパー、ソングライターであり、レコード・レーベル兼コレクティヴ、Nuxxeの共同設立者でもある。また、Shygirlの音楽は、ダンス・ミュージック、インダストリアル・ヒップホップ、エクスペリメンタル・ポップ、グライム、ディコンストラクテッド・クラブの要素を取り入れている。この度、Shygirlはfabric限定のシングル「Making the Beast」をリリースし、同時に、fabricの名誉あるpresentsシリーズに参加することを発表した。fabric presents Shygirlのリリースは、fabricの25周年記念の始まりであり、Shygirlは、年間を通してミックスキュレーションする5組のアーティストの第1弾として、その先頭に立つ。先頃、Shygirlは『Club Shy』EPをリリース。Pitchfork、Rolling Stone、Mixmag、BBC Radio & 6から支持を得ている。

After shifting from the abrasive industrial hip-hop of her early EPs to the intimate left-field pop songs of her 2022 full-length Nymph, Shygirl embraced dance music at its most hypnotic with her subsequent singles and Club Shy EP. Her first mix CD is closely related to this phase of her career, including several tracks from Club Shy mixed into a seamless flow of simmering house cuts. While Shygirls own music is generally personality-driven even if its not always brash or commanding, here she largely takes a back seat to the grooves. Its her party, but shes not forcing everyone to pay attention to her at all times. Original song "Making the Beast" is all sly vocals, EBM-ish sequencers, and pumping beats rather than flashy hooks and upfront sexuality. The summery speed garage of Eliza Rose and the Martinez Brothers "Pleasure Peak" segues into Hudson Mohawke and Nikki Nairs playful club smash "Set the Roof" (the original, not the remix sung by an AI-generated Homer Simpson voice). From there, the mix elevates to straight-up euphoric Euro-trance with Laavas 2002 hit "Wherever You Are (I Feel Love)," followed by Club Winstons ATB-esque "Summer" and James Hypes update of Kristine Blondes "Love Shy." Shygirl herself heads into trance territory with her Cosha collaboration "thicc," and Skin on Skins uplifting house gem "Magic" is somewhat overshadowed by a lengthy blend into the shimmering neo-trance of TDJ and Vitesse Xs "Into Dream." The mix gets a bit rambunctious towards the end, with the ravey, breakbeat-driven "S e x" by George Riley and Hudson Mohawke, then 96 Backs sneaky "Laco (Metrist Reworm)." The tempo briefly slows down at the end, with Conall and Coucou Chloes "Up" sounding closer to something from an earlier Shygirl EP. Fabric Presents Shygirl was the first release of the revered London clubs 25th anniversary celebrations, bringing back the iconic CD tin design of the Fabric and Fabriclive mix series, which each issued 100 volumes between 2001 and 2018. ~ Paul Simpson

設立から四半世紀を数える名門ファブリックのミックス・シリーズにサマソニでの来日も記憶に新しいフィメール・アーティストが登場。自身が演者としてステージに立つだけあって魅せ方を心得た展開でストーリーを進め、クリスティン・ブロンド～ぐちょん"Piano Bros"が飛び出す中盤に盛り上がりのピークを配置し、ダークにキメていく後半の進行も◎。
