現代イギリスを代表する作曲家
ジョン・ピカードの交響曲と声楽曲!

SACDハイブリッド盤。イギリスの作曲家ジョン・ピカードは、独自の力強さをもつ、調性を大胆に拡大した語法の管弦楽と器楽の作品でもっともよく知られています。ナッシュ・アンサンブルが彼の室内楽作品を演奏した『アレッポの園芸商』(BIS SA-2461)に次ぎ、2曲の交響曲と室内管弦楽共演の歌曲集がリリースされます。

《交響曲第2番》は、1987年、ピカードが23歳の時に書き上げた作品です。アメリカのジャーナリストで作家のジョン・ハーシー John Herseyの著書、原爆で焼かれた町の灰の中から再び存在を主張した植生を語る『Hiroshima(ヒロシマ)』に共感、インスピレーションを得て作曲されました。1989年3月、マンチェスターでオダリーネ・デ・ラ・マルティネス指揮BBCフィルハーモニック管弦楽団が初演。初めてプロのオーケストラによって演奏されたピカードの作品です。

《ヴェルレーヌ歌曲集》は、フランスの詩人ポール・ヴェルレーヌ Paul Verlaine の詩をテクストに作曲されました。「秋の日の ヴィオロンの ためいきの…」という上田敏の訳で知られる『Chandon d'automne(秋の歌)』に始まり、恋する人への詩人の夢想といわれる『Le soleil d'or(黄金色の太陽)』で終わる。表現の幅のある6つの詩が、ドラマティックな対比と気分の推移に沿ってつながっています。ソプラノのエマ・トリング Emma Tring は、ブリストル大学とギルドホール音楽演劇大学で学び、今日の音楽を中心とするレパートリーでソリストとアンサンブル歌手として活動しています。

《交響曲第6番》は、COVID-19のパンデミックの真っ只中に作曲された作品です。穏やかに始まり、暗い「不安」の支配する気分に移ってゆく第1楽章。暗闇からの救済をもたらす第2楽章。BISレーベル社長ロバート・フォン・バール氏に献呈され、この録音によって初めて演奏されました。

交響曲第5番や《協奏的変奏曲》を録音した(BIS SA-2261)マーティン・ブラビンズ指揮のBBCウェールズ・ナショナル管弦楽団によるアルバムです。

The three works on this release of music by John Pickard arent claimed to be world premieres, but online listings of recordings of Pickards work do not show other performances of the Symphony No. 2, Symphony No. 6, and Verlaine Songs. Listeners will have the sense of a happy discovery, and that may be one factor that put this release on classical best-seller lists in the spring of 2024. The Symphony No. 2, composed when Pickard was 23, is a real find, powerfully rhythmic, already showing Pickards deft, accessible way with extended tonality and quite demanding in its writing for brass. The tireless Martyn Brabbins excels here in the work he draws from the brass section of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. No less effective is his support from soprano Emma Tring in the vocal writing of the Verlaine Songs, here presented in their orchestral guise. These are difficult pieces that require the soprano to hang out for extended stretches at the top of her register; Pickard wrote the songs specifically with Trings voice in mind, and everything jells in this performance. The Symphony No. 6 is a more subdued work, composed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Any one of these pieces could enliven an orchestral concert, and BIS delivers fine, detailed sound from Hoddinott Hall in Cardiff. A wonderful, revelatory album of contemporary orchestral music. ~ James Manheim
