ウィリー・ネルソンの最新スタジオアルバム『The Border』(邦題:国境)

バディ・キャノンがプロデュースを手がけたウィリー・ネルソンの新作『The Border』(邦題:国境)は、ネルソン/キャノン共作の4曲を含む、10曲のコンテンポラリー・カントリー・ソングを収録。ロドニー・クロウェルとアレン・シャンブリンの共作曲の「The Border」は、国境警備員の内面と現実を描いた作品。
ローリング・ストーン誌はクロウェルのこの曲を「政治的視点ではなく人間的視点を大切にすることによって、悲劇を描き出している」と評している。この刺激的な曲を取り上げたウィリーは、その知的で円熟味を感じさせる解釈によって、アルバムが提示する世界的な喫緊の共通課題を歌い込んでいる。その長いキャリアを通じてウィリー・ネルソンは、カントリー・ミュージック界の優れたソングライターたちにスポットを当てることに努めてきたが、今作でもラリー・コーデルとエリン・エンダーリンの「I Wrote This Song For You」、ロドニー・クロウェルとウィル・ジェニングスの「Many A Long And Lonesome Highway」、ショーン・キャンプとモンティ・ホルムズの「Made In Texas」、マイク・リードの「Nobody Knows Me Like You」などが取り上げられている。

Technically, The Border is the sequel to A Beautiful Time, the 2022 album that found Willie Nelson once again ruminating upon a road long traveled. Nelsons latter-day albums with producer Buddy Cannon often concerned mortality, a quality that lends a natural gravity. That trait isnt quite absent on The Border -- Willies 75th album, appearing after a pair of winning covers records released in the wake of A Beautiful Time -- yet it is subdued. When Nelson ponders "Once Upon a Yesterday," hes thinking of old songs and departed friends, more grateful that it happened than sad that those days are gone. Similarly, when hes wondering "How Much Does It Cost" to be free, he sounds bemused, not rueful. That levity extends through the jazzily jaunty "What If Im Out of My Mind," joining the aforementioned tunes among the handful of Nelson/Cannon originals on the record ("Kiss Me When Youre Through" is the other). Nelson cedes the weightier material to Rodney Crowell, whose "The Border" and "Many a Long and Lonesome Highway" open the respective sides of The Border, creating the impression that this album is a bit contemplative. Thats not the case. Thanks to the fanciful "Hanks Guitar" and the sly shuffle "Made in Texas" -- an amiable slice of Western swing with nods to Bob Wills, Lone Star beer, and the immortal joke "You can always tell a Texan/But you cant tell him much" -- the album carries a lightness thats emphasized by its brisk running time. That might mean The Border, unlike A Beautiful Time, doesnt quite feel like a final chapter but rather a welcome coda restating Nelsons strengths with casual ease. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

ウィリー・ネルソン。カントリー界のレジェンドでありスーパースターであろう。その新譜を聴いてみた。「国境」と名づけられた、それだけでなんだかワクワクしてしまう。そして流れてくる音は尖ったところがなく、シンプルで穏やかなもの。まるで人口調味料ではない、出汁が良く効いた最上の料理を食べているようだ。カントリーのカテゴリーには治まらない曲をいつもの「語るような」歌い方で物語を紡ぐ。"Lonesone Highway"とか"Lonesome Road"など長距離ドライバーが聴いたら涙ぐみそうなワードが散りばめられて、なんだか自分までその気になってしまいそうだ。

クリント・イーストウッドより3つも若いウィリー翁。2024年春の新作は、ロドニー・クロムウェルの表題曲ほかカントリー界の優秀なソングライターたちのカヴァーとバディ・キャノンとの共作曲などで構成されているが、透徹した視点で人間存在の本質を突く歌の力はすこぶる快調。ここにきてなお未知なるあちら側をめざして前進する姿勢に凄みすら漂う通算152枚目。
