「レバー・ハープ」と「ペダル・ハープ」のための音楽

弦についたレバーで音程(音階)を調節する「レバー・ハープ」と足元のペダルで音程(音階)を調節する「ペダル・ハープ」の双方で卓越した技術とユニークな表現力を発揮するローレン・スコット。2020年にリリースしたデビュー・アルバム「Beyond the Horizon」(AV2417)では、自作やジョン・ケージ、ビートルズなどのアレンジをレバー・ハープのみで披露したスコットですが、待望のセカンド・アルバムでは、レバー・ハープとペダル・ハープ、更には弦に様々な物をあてて音色を変えたプリペアド・ペダル・ハープを駆使。自作の新作や現代のハープ弾きたちによるオリジナル作品、そしてラヴェル、バッハ、民謡などからの素敵なアレンジを散りばめ、ハープの新たな魅力、新鮮なサウンドをお届けします。

ローレン・スコットはオーストラリア出身、現在は英国で様々なオーケストラやアンサンブルとの共演、そしてテレビやラジオへの活発な出演など、ハープ・コミュニティの発展へ寄与し、5年間英国ハープ協会の会長も務めたハーピストです。

Recitals of classical repertory from the leading harpists of the day are readily available, but this one, the sophomore release by Lauren Scott, is something else again. Scott offers a few classical works in her own arrangements, but most of the music is original, by herself or others. It is designed to showcase unusual sounds from the harp. Scott begins with the titular Sea of Stars, on which she plays both a lever harp (an instrument for which she has written manuals) and a pedal harp; she composed the work, which explores the difference in timbre between the two instruments. As the program proceeds, Scott goes further into harp sounds. Grace-Evangeline Masons Glass Cathedrals is a remarkable virtuoso work that is highly evocative of its subject. Scotts The Sun and Her Flowers uses a prepared pedal harp with paper stretched across the strings to create a persuasive percussion effect. This is a crossover album that will be admired by other players of the instrument; even for the general listener, Scotts technical accomplishment seems substantial. The production at a London studio by Andy Scott (no word on whether there is any relation) serves Lauren well, reproducing the shades of sound that are at the heart of her recording.
