LIVE AT NEWPORT contains 8 previously unreleased tracks and an introduction by Peter Yarrow.
Recorded live at the Newport Folk Festival, Newport, Rhode Island in 1963, 1964 and 1966. Includes liner notes by Mary Katherine Aldin.
Recorded at the 1963, 1964, and 1966 Newport Folk Festivals and released on the 20th anniversary of Ochs' 1976 suicide, LIVE AT NEWPORT is a vital snapshot of Phil Ochs in front of an appreciative audience. (Ironically, Ochs' 1966 album IN CONCERT was in fact recorded in a studio and overdubbed with crowd noise.) It's also a good overview of the first half of Ochs' career, when the singer/songwriter was living in New York and playing topical, often scathingly funny, folk songs.
Like his contemporary Richard Farina, Ochs was more of a deadpan satirist than an angry lecturer, and the absurdity of politics in the '60s shines clearer in tunes like "I Ain't Marchin' Anymore" and "Draft Dodger Rag" than it does in more traditional story songs like "Ballad of Medgar Evers." Eight of these 12 songs are previously unreleased.
