ロンドンのクィア・コミュニティを代表する女性DJ/プロデューサー、Elkkaによるデビュー・アルバムが発売!

Four Tet, Floating Points, Sofia Kourtesis, SHERELLEなどから支持され、LGBTQ+ダンス・コミュニティの一員として、ベルグハインのPanorama BarやロンドンのFEEL ITといったクィア・パーティで定期的に活動しているカーディフ生まれのプロデューサーでDJのElkka。彼女のデビュー・アルバム『Prism Of Pleasure』が〈Ninja Tune〉よりリリース。
クィアとしての親密な関係性をテーマにした『Prism of Pleasure』は、女性の視線を通して、熱気に満ちた不思議な部屋を覗き見ているような作品だ。Elkkaの妻であり、長年のコラボレーターでもあるAlex Lambertが撮影したアルバムのアートワークは、このコンセプトを見事に表現している。
美しくも深淵なエレクトロニック・ダンス・トラック「Make Me」を筆頭に、「Crushhh」の滑らかなヴォーカルから、「surrender2me」のうねるようなシンセ・パターンまで、『Prism of Pleasure』の全10曲は、汗まみれの夜や、心と心のつながり、そして、秘められた快楽などがパッチワークのように展開されていく。大胆でクイアな女性、Elkkaが表現する官能的で神秘的な愛の世界へと誘われよう。

Elkka is a Welsh DJ, producer, vocalist, and songwriter, as well as a co-founder of the inclusive queer platform femme culture. Shes been releasing solo material since 2016, including a 2020 single titled "I. Miss. Raving." and several EPs for Ninja Tunes Technicolour imprint. Her 2021 mix for BBC Radio 1s Essential Mix was voted the best of the year, and she released a volume of the DJ-Kicks series in 2023. After several years of producing house tracks that are generally upbeat and bubbly, yet sometimes a bit melancholy, she took a turn towards more sensual, vocal-driven expression with her standout 2022 single "I Just Want to Love You." Prism of Pleasure, her 2024 full-length debut on Ninja Tune proper, is a full exploration of queer intimacy, containing Elkkas most vulnerable songwriting. Downtempo opener "Break all my walls down" is particularly bold in the way Elkka goes to extreme lengths to attempt to understand her partner. "Your Skin," one of the albums most complex, dazzling productions, is more upfront in the way it expresses desire for sex and physical contact. The trippy, breezy "Crushhh," one of two songs featuring John Carroll Kirby, describes the stress and confusion of not knowing what to do during an intimate situation. While the record has plenty of highly personal tracks, there are also several festival-ready dance anthems expressing these feelings in a more universal way. The spirited "Right Here" seems like it was made for large crowds to sing and clap along to, while "Make Me" is a breaky, propulsive throwback to early-90s dance-pop. The albums most impressive cut is also its least conventional. "Passionfruit," also featuring Kirby, is a cosmic deep house instrumental that draws a moment of dancefloor ecstasy out for nine blissful minutes, before leading into the still-excellent "I Just Want to Love You." Prism of Pleasure is at its best when it expresses club euphoria and togetherness, but as a whole, it paints a much more detailed picture of Elkkas personality than her previous work. ~ Paul Simpson

ロンドンのクィア・コミュニティを代表するDJ/プロデューサーによる初のオリジナル・アルバム。2023年のDJミックス作品で幅広い背景を披露していた彼女だが、オリジナル曲で埋め尽くされた本作で改めて勢力図を塗りかえる勢いだ。先行曲"Make Me"ではキャシー・デニスの90年代名曲を大胆に取り入れて現代的にアップデートし、既発のアンセム"I Just Want To Love You"もここでよりいっそう美しく響いている。随所で披露した自身のヴォーカルも滑らかで、ジョン・キャロル・カービーをしれっと招き入れているセンスも抜群。官能的で神秘的な愛の世界へと誘われること間違いなし。
