1979年ルーマニア生まれの優れたドイツ人ピアニスト、ヘルベルト・シュフが、妻でもあるギュルル・エンサリとの共演新譜で、naiveに戻ってきました。4手と2台のピアノのための作品がミックスされた「Eternity(永遠)」と題した1枚です。シューベルトの晩年の傑作のひとつである幻想曲ヘ短調は、1854年にシューマンが書いた主題にブラームスが作曲したシューマンの主題による変奏曲と対になっています。1943年に2台のピアノのために作曲されたメシアンの記念碑的作品集《アーメンの幻影》からの3つの抜粋は、壮大で瞑想的な間奏曲として、またベートーヴェンの《大フーガ》への序奏としても機能しています。

The married duo piano couple of Gulru Ensari and Herbert Schuch have released several albums together, and they reach for the thematic stars on this 2024 release, titled Eternity. All the music certainly touches on this theme somehow; Schuberts Fantasia in F minor, D. 940, was written toward the end of his life, while Brahms Variations on a Theme by Schumann in E flat major, Op. 23, are based on the very last thing Schumann wrote before he went insane, explaining that the melody had been dictated by angels. Messiaens Visions de lamen are typically cosmic, while Beethovens Grosse Fuge, Op. 134, in the rarely heard piano four-hands arrangement by Beethoven himself, seems ready to storm the gates of heaven. Schuch writes that "it would take a lot to explain why we have chosen these particular pieces, why we have chosen precisely this sequence," although the Grosse Fuge certainly seems to belong at the end. Better just to observe the cooperation between the two pianists. There is arguably a quality distinctive to the playing of married musicians, and Ensari and Schuch have a good measure of it. Explore the Brahms variations, where Schumanns limpid theme is built up into a massive architecture of harmony and register in which each detail is important and is clarified by the two players.
