By mid-2024, when this release appeared, one had begun to encounter the term "COVID-19" a bit less frequently in booklet and program notes, but this ingenious release by violinist Fenella Humphreys emerges as a major contribution to the final phase. Humphreys writes that her program here "grew out of a longing to keep performing music that I was gifted, arranged, or first discovered during the spring of 2020." The 23 works here are mostly short, all for unaccompanied violin, and to hold any group of pieces that size together in this most exacting of genres is quite an accomplishment. Humphreys does even better, mixing repertory pieces with contemporary music in a way that flatters the latter beautifully and seems to link them at a deep emotional level. Hear the modal shadings that connect George Walkers Bleu to Debussys La fille aux cheveux de lin. Some of the pieces are, as she states, arranged by Humphreys, and these are often quite original. The world is full of arrangements of Bachs monumental Toccata and Fugue for organ in D minor, BWV 565; making it into a solo violin piece may seem a tall order, but listen and learn. A standout violin solo release that catches the inward, meditative mood of the time that birthed it. ~ James Manheim
