The first studio album Lizz Wright released on her Blues & Greens label, Shadow also marks the singers 25th year as a professional artist. Where 2017s Grace was a covers-oriented set produced by Joe Henry, this incorporates a higher percentage of originals and sees guitarist Chris Bruce tighten his bond with Wright as producer. Wright co-wrote five of the 11 songs, including "Root of Mercy," an airy ballad full of rich imagery that honors the memory of her grandmother. The blues is more present here than it was on Grace, epitomized by the longing "Your Love," where Meshell Ndegeocellos bass provides the musculature and Brandee Youngers ripples of harp accentuate Wrights hopefulness. Another bluesy original that elegantly aches, "Sparrow," draws a link to 2005s Dreaming Wide Awake -- on which Wright covered Ella Jenkins "Wake Up Little Sparrow" -- and features Angelique Kidjo in a 100-percent-connected supporting role. Violinists Trina Basu and Arun Ramamurthy make equally valuable contributions to a restrained and powerful rendering of Caitlin Cantys "Lost in the Valley." The greatest testament to Wrights ability to combine burning passion and supreme nuance might be her version of Sandy Dennys "Who Knows Where the Time Goes," another highlight. ~ Andy Kellman

オリジナル5曲とカヴァー6曲で構成される8作目。ミシェル・ンデゲオチェロのベースがグルーヴを与え、ブランディ・ヤンガーのハープが楽曲に華を添えるソウル"Your Love"がまずは素晴らしい。カヴァー曲においても、ジャズやブルースにおいてはスモーキーで陰影のある歌を、フォークでは優美な声を聴かせる、圧巻の表現力を魅せていく。聴くほどに味わいの増す一枚だ。

エラ～ニーナ～ディーディーの系譜と言ったら叱られるだろうか、黒人女性ヴォーカルの「メインストリーム」を歩くリズ・ライトの8枚目のリーダー作品。アンジェリーク・キジョー、ミシェル・ンデゲオチェロ、ブランディー・ヤンガーの参加が彼女の今の「立ち位置」を示している。公開されているPV《Sweet Feeling》もブルージーなグルーヴがたまらない。絶対にアナログ盤で鳴らしたい内容だ。キジョーとブランディー・ヤンガーが加わった《Your Love》は、広い音楽ジャンルを包括して醸造して、今の感性を表出した一曲。年齢的にはノラ・ジョーンズ世代だ、余裕綽々の脂が乗りきった歌が金色のディスクから流れ出る。
