On his first domestically issued CD as a leader, he shows off his bop skills as well. Joined by pianist Dave LaLama and bassist Dave Givens, Ascione clearly rivals any drummer on the jazz scene in the 1990s. His wild unique approach to Monk's "Well You Needn't," his soft brushwork behind guitarist Ron Affif on a dreamy take of "All My Tomorrows," and his hard-edged drumming on "All Blues" only begin to hint at the breadth of his immense talent. Tenor saxman Jerry Weldon is featured on a lively run through "Moment's Notice" and a rollicking "Bouncin' With Bud." Also memorable is the gorgeous arrangement of "Chelsea Bridge."
