Early Singles 1981-1982 combines and expands the first two short-form releases by Xmal Deutschland. In essence, this is what the Hamburg-based post-punk band recorded before they attracted Ivo Watts-Russell and released two albums and another pair of singles on the revered post-punk aesthetes 4AD label. Originally five women, Xmal recorded their three-song 7" debut for local imprint Zickzack as a temporarily reconfigured quartet with bassist Anja Huwe reluctantly at the microphone due to the absence of Rita Simon (who later relieved Huwe on bass). Remarkably, Huwe doesnt sound the least bit tentative, displaying a natural sense of command on the taut "Schwarz Welt," the frosty "Die Wolken," and the more playful "Grossstadtindianer." Hers was a distinctive voice from the start. While the debut is a fine example of Neue Deutsche Welle, goth rock, and retrospective classifications like synth punk and cold wave, Xmal truly found their footing with their second Zickzack offering "Incubus Succubus," a ringing, icepick-sharp dancefloor weapon that could have cast its spell without the horror FX. The B-sides of the 12" respectively drone and judder like a Nico-fronted Devo and pummel in a manner akin to peers DAF. Two tracks from the same era are included. The prancing "Kalbermarsch," taken from a various-artists Zickzack compilation issued between the two singles, is the plainest song of the bunch, even with multiple accelerations and decelerations in tempo. Tacked at the end is "Allein," recorded live at Copenhagens 1982 Nosferatu Festival (joy!), coincidentally where Xmal shared the stage with Sort Sol (aka Sods), the band that pipped them to the post as the first European act on 4AD. That Xmal didnt release a studio version of "Allein" is confounding. A soundtrack for a bracing trip through a starless cityscape with Huwe on high alert and brilliant guitarist Manuela Rickers slashing through the dark, it would have been a contender for the bands signature song.
