Blitz Bazawules 2023 musical film adaptation of The Color Purple, based on the 2005 Broadway musical adaptation of Alice Walkers 1982 novel, was accompanied with this "music from and inspired by" compilation. A little less than half of the songs update material from the stage production. The most powerful moment is when Fantasia (in the role of Celie) ably handles the self-determination anthem "Im Here." Other highlights include a gutsier "Hell No!," voiced by Danielle Brooks (Sofia), and a duly brash "Push da Button" from Taraji P. Henson (Shug Avery). Most notable among the new songs is the Academy Award-nominated "Keep It Movin," performed by Halle Bailey (young Nettie) and Phylicia Pearl Mpasi (young Celie). The significant "inspired by" portion tends to be more contemporary in nature, from several remixes produced by Missy Elliott, Timbaland, and South African Afro house artist Morda, to the Usher and H.E.R. duet "Risk It All." ~ TiVo Staff
