1937年、旧ソ連時代のタリンに生まれ、エフゲニー・ムラヴィンスキーに師事するなどし、今やエストニアを代表する世界的巨匠となったネーメ・ヤルヴィ。500タイトル近くに及ぶ膨大な、そして多彩な内容のレコーディングという偉大な業績を誇り、2018年の英グラモフォン賞において「生涯功労賞(ライフタイム・アチーヴメント賞)」を受賞したエストニアの巨匠の最新録音は、2022年6月7日に迎えた85歳の誕生日を含む3日間で録音したフランス・ロマン派の作曲家、エドゥアール・ラロの管弦楽作品集。

ラロは、作曲家、ヴァイオリンおよびヴィオラ奏者として活躍し、スペイン交響曲(実質的にはヴァイオリン協奏曲)、チェロ協奏曲で知られています。本アルバムでは、生涯上演された唯一のオペラで、フランスで大成功を収めた《イスの王様》からの序曲、パリ・オペラ座の委嘱作品であるバレエ音楽《ナムーナ》、そして、1886年に完成した力作《交響曲ト短調》で締めくくられます。この交響曲は、同年に作曲されたサン=サーンスのオルガン交響曲とフランクの交響曲の影に隠れてしまいがちですが、ラテン系音楽を愛するラロの旋律的才能と和声が見事に発揮されており、貴重な近代フランスにおける交響曲として一聴に値する作品と言えるでしょう。

The indefatigable conductor Neeme Jarvi, whose 85th birthday fell during the recording of this album in 2022, has issued numerous recordings of French late Romantic music and is one of the worlds acknowledged specialists in the field. Yet prior to this album, which made classical best-seller lists in early 2024, he had apparently never recorded music by Edouard Lalo. This may be because Lalo is the classic one-hit wonder, represented mostly by his Symphonie espagnole for violin and orchestra, Op. 21, and not much else. Working with his highly congenial Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Jarvi offers a thoroughly entertaining hour and a quarter of music that makes the case for more frequent Lalo programming. The opening work, the Overture to Le roi dYs, comes from an occasionally heard Lalo opera; the overture by itself was issued by Lalos publishers as a kind of single, and it is a wonderful orchestral showpiece. The next work, the "Valse de la cigarette" from the ballet Namouna, originally surfaced in a similar way, and there is no reason it could not become a favorite on light orchestral programs or pops concerts. The two suites from Namouna itself perhaps offer a glimpse into why Lalo has been neglected; the music is stylistically eclectic, with a bit of Wagner here, a bit of Mendelssohn there, but it is unfailingly well executed and tuneful, and it makes one want to see the ballet scenes to which it was attached. The spacious acoustic of the Estonia Concert Hall is one attraction here; the detailed Hugh Macdonald annotations are another for album buyers. The main attraction, as ever, is Jarvis unfailing instinct for finding the right tone in French music, and this release is as entertaining as anything else he has ever done. ~ James Manheim
