Former Television guitarist Richard Lloyd's first album of the new century sounds, superficially, like his old band, with passionately inventive guitar work, and singing that, if anything, out-Verlaines ex-colleague Tom Verlaine's. Still, THE COVER DOESN'T MATTER is far closer to power pop than to Television's abstract art rock. For one thing, Lloyd mostly writes love songs; for another he loves the sort of chiming, Byrdsian riffs that decorate songs here like "I Thought" (not for nothing did Lloyd work with power-pop god Matthew Sweet for much of the '90s). The end result is a sort of meat-and-potatoes guitar-rock album, enlivened by Lloyd's brilliant riffing and some imaginative production touches, particularly the ping-ponging guitars in "Ain't It Time."
