This release appeared in February of 2024, just in time for the spring gardening season of that year, and it will doubtless appear on many gift lists. Tenor Alessandro Fisher conceived the album during the COVID-19 pandemic, and listeners who have worked through the various heavy album concepts associated with that event may well be glad to have something more cheerful. These external considerations aside, although flowers are hardly a topic unknown in art song, Fisher has devised a novel program here. The highlight may be the Six Songs, Op. 88, of Sibelius, known as "Flower Songs," which Sibelius designated as a song cycle. These are from 1917, relatively late in Sibelius career, and they condense his language and phrase structure down to miniature dimensions; in these, they are closer to orchestral language than to the composers lighter theatrical language. They are, interestingly, in Swedish, and while this reviewer is not qualified to judge the idiomatic quality or lack thereof in that language, Fisher does generally well with the range of languages here, that includes English. He puts across charm and humor in that language, even in the encore from Michael Flanders and Donald Swann, and in general, he is careful not to stray from a light mood even as he delves into Mendelssohn and the Schumanns at the beginning. With Carlos Guastavino, he goes into popular territory, and the songs by composer Eduard Toldra are also nice finds. There is enough here to interest both gardeners and their musical companions. ~ James Manheim
