Volume two of AIP's trawl through the Moxie label's catalog is not as good as its predecessor and is closer to the garage anthology norm. That's probably random rather than the result of the quality of the selection process, since this (like Vol. One) is presented in alphabetical order of artist names, picking up (at "E") where the first installment left off. With two discs and 56 songs, though -- all (or most) of which are not on CD elsewhere -- it's worth the time of committed '60s garage collectors. There are some real oddities here, like Nikita the "K"'s AM radio-DJ spoof "Go Go Radio Moscow"; one of Sun Records' rare (and perhaps sole) entry in the idiom, Randy & the Radiants' "My Way of Thinking"; the New Wing's "I Need Love," with a backing track by Los Angeles psychedelic band the Sons of Adam (although guitarist Randy Holden does not remember participating), and the Mops, from Japan, singing (in Japanese) "Please Kill Me." Musical highlights include Fountain of Youth's "Don't Blame Me" on the Colgems (home of the Monkees) label, which is an unusually satisfying hybrid of Sky Saxon-like vocals and pop-conscious production; Mystic Number National Bank's tough cover of "I Put a Spell on You," and one of the few cuts (other than "It's a-Happening") to emerge by the Magic Mushrooms, "Never Let Go," which is a superb, acidic minor-key rave-up. ~ Richie Unterberger
