Bandleader Charlie Barnet wrote, "I held out against the bop influence until 1949, but had to go along with it then because none of the younger musicians knew how to approach big band except in that idiom." Nonetheless to our modern ears many of these tunes still sound like relics of the swing era even though they postdate the golden years of swing by four years. SWELL AND SUPER represents jazz in a period of great transition. The best thing here is the sparkling trumpet section. Two of the best big band trumpeters ever, Maynard Ferguson and Doc Severinsen, here redefine range on the instrument. Hitting notes once thought to be way too high in pitch for the trumpet, these two horn men altered the course of trumpet history, trumpeter/bandleader Harry James even commenting that this was the best trumpet section he had ever heard. Standout tracks include "Lemon Drop" and "Balboa (Bop City)"; the latter best displays the shifts that were taking place in jazz during this period.
