Recorded during 1939, the last year of drummer/bandleader Chick Webb's life, STANDING TALL includes 12 classic swing numbers from the Golden Age of Jazz. Webb's version of Count Basie's "One O'Clock Jump" stands up to Basie's own rendition. On this number, the brass section screeches and growls while pianist Tommy Fulford embodies the stride tradition with each meticulously placed note. Webb gets his licks in, too, filling up the gaps in between phrases with powerful accents on his snare drum and tom-toms.
"I Never Knew Heaven Could Speak" features the incomparable Ella Fitzgerald, who interprets this song like a reed player. Specifically, Fitzgerald glides into her higher register much like a clarinetist would, and her smooth-toned voice is supported by the equally velvety saxophone section. In general, STANDING TALL documents Chick Webb & His Orchestra in their prime. Unfortunately, these halcyon days were not to last. The animated drummer passed away from tuberculosis just one month after seven of these tracks were recorded. However, no one could say that he didn't go out on top.
