2023年グラモフォン・アワードのオペラ部門受賞指揮者、ガードナー(ティペットの≪真夏の結婚≫(LPO-124)で受賞)。待望の新譜はベルリオーズ!ロイヤル・フェスティバル・ホールで3つの合唱団を招いて演奏した≪ファウストの劫罰≫です。録音は2023年2月4日、ロイヤル・フェスティバル・ホールの演奏会形式演奏会のライヴ録音です。グランド・オペラならではの迫力と大規模感が見事にとらえられた録音、そして歌手一人ひとりの豊かな歌声、管弦楽の咆哮、すべてが見事に結実した、ぜいたくな新録音の登場です。

ファウスト役のカレン・カーギルはスコットランド出身、2002年キャスリーン・フェリアー賞受賞、名だたる歌劇場に登場する傍ら第九などの演奏会でもひっぱりだこの存在。アメリカのテノール、ジョン・アーヴィンは、メユールなどの初期ロマン派からロッシーニまで、様々なキャラクターを自在に歌いこなし「黄金の声」「エレガントなウィット」と絶賛されています。イギリスを代表するバリトン、クリストヴァー・パーヴスもワーグナーからサーリアホ作品まで、様々な時代のものを巧に演じ歌いその存在感は圧倒的。ニュージーランドのテノール、ジョナサン・レマルも、ラヴィ・シャンカルのオペラにも登場したこともある存在。1974年生まれのガードナーは2021年よりロンドン・フィルの首席指揮者を務めております。

  • ファウストを歌うテノールのジョン・アーヴィンの輝かしく瑞々しい歌声がとても魅力的で、第3部開始や第4部「自然への祈り」のアリアが聴きどころ。カレン・カーギルはラトル盤に続きマルグリートを歌っているが、安定の歌いっぷり。合唱大国イギリスが誇るコーラスも分厚く迫力がある。V・ユロフスキの後任でロンドン・フィルの首席指揮者を担うガードナーは広いレパートリーをCHANDOSレーベルで沢山の録音を行なっている。声楽作品にも秀でていて、この録音はロンドン・フィルから細やかな表現と弾力あるサウンドを引き出している。地獄への騎行のスペクタクルとエピローグの安寧さの対比が素晴らしい。
