Not to be confused with THE LEGENDARY PATSY CLINE on Pair Records or THE LEGENDARY PATSY CLINE on Special Music, although Platinum's compilation includes just as little documentation (no writer's credits, session personnel, or recording dates) as those other releases. Like them, this set consists of material recorded in the first part of Cline's career, her five-year stint with Four Star (1955-1960).
As an untried artist, Cline was put through the paces of trying her voice at various styles to see what would hit with the public. Fortunately, she worked consistently with Owen Bradley, one of the most innovative and talented Nashville producers around. Bradley tried gospel ("Life's Railway to Heaven"), R&B ("Today, Tomorrow and Forever"), and proven country material ("Lovesick Blues") as well as straight honky-tonk like "Crazy Dreams" and "A Church, A Courtroom, And Then Goodbye." Eventually they discovered that Patsy's greatest strength lay in an early '60s cocktail of popular and Tin Pan Alley material, strings, and backup vocals, best represented by MCA's reissue of the Decca LP set THE PATSY CLINE STORY. Meanwhile, on this collection, the steel guitars still whine, the guitars still twang, and one of country's greatest legends still sounds country.
