On the monstrous 20th anniversary edition of their sophomore album, Meteora, Linkin Park dug into the vault for a collection of rarities, demos, B-sides, and live recordings to match the scope of what they had accomplished on the similar Hybrid Theory deluxe reissue from 2020. In addition to concert recordings, rarities, and previous fan-club-only releases, Mike Shinoda and the surviving members of the band also included the Lost Demos set, a wealth of unearthed ideas and fully formed songs that hadnt yet seen the light of day. Nodding to this compilations title, standout single "Lost" is classic Linkin Park, bouncing late frontman Chester Benningtons wounded singing and fierce howls off of Shinodas haunted echoes. Originally intended to be the closing track on Meteora, "Lost" lived up to its title, hiding in a vault for two decades until it was unearthed by Shinoda in time for the anniversary reissue. The song became a modest hit on international rock radio -- topping charts in Canada, the U.K., and U.S. -- and sated the publics demand to hear more of Bennington; its one of the finest moments in their catalog. Lost Demos bestows even more could-have-been-singles to hungry diehards, with the aggressive "Fighting Myself," the Shinoda-heavy "More the Victim" and "Healing Foot," and the skittering riff assault "Massive" adding more fully realized gems to the bands early, prime era (finished songs "Wesside" and "Resolution" are also included, but just dont feel as complete). This bonus release is rounded out by seven demos -- check out that jarring version of "Faint" -- that offer further peeks into the Meteora studio process and, at their best, tease even more from a period that most fans pinpoint as the zenith of Linkin Parks trademark sound. ~ Neil Z.
