コサックの娘オクサーナは、自分が一番美しいと思い、愛の告白をしてきたヴァクーラに「女帝の靴が欲しい」と無理難題を吹っ掛けます。一方ヴァクーラの母ソローハは魔女で、悪魔と愛し合っています。その悪魔を捕まえたヴァクーラは、「女帝の靴」を手に入れるために十字架の力で悪魔を手下にして・・・
作家ニコライ・ゴーゴリが1832年に出版した創作民話集『ディカーニカ近郷夜話』の中の1編『クリスマス・イヴ』を原作に、リムスキー=コルサコフが独創的な和声法によるオーケストレーションを駆使して作曲。その音楽は初演当時から高く評価されたものの、舞台演出の難しさから上演される機会が少なかった作品です。こちらは先行する同キャストによる映像の音声をCDに収録したものです。
歌唱陣では主役ヴァクーラに、美声テノールのゲオルギー・ヴァシリエフ、オクサーナ役に表情豊かな新鋭ソプラノのユリア・ムジチェンコ、ソローハ役にベテラン、エンケレイダ・シュコーザ、悪魔役にアンドレイ・ポポフらを配し、日本でもおなじみの名指揮者セバスティアン・ヴァイグレ率いるフランクフルト歌劇場の合唱団、オーケストラが、リムスキー=コルサコフの豊潤な音楽を鮮やかに奏でます。
