イギリスのネオアコ・バンド、イースト・ヴィレッジのマスターピース『ドロップ・アウト』が、30周年アニヴァーサリー・デラックス・エディションでリリース。

East Villageの『Drop Out』は、この30年間、新たな耳と心を魅了し続けてきた。90年代初頭にレコーディングされ、リリースされたこのイギリスの4人組の唯一のアルバムは、長い間、当時の隠れた宝石のひとつと見なされており、知る人ぞ知る作品として、ひそやかな敬愛の念を込めて語られている。Saint EtienneのBob Stanleyは、この作品を「80年代のギター・ミュージック、甘いマイナー・コード、Dylan風の歌詞のためのエレジー」と呼んだことがあるが、これはこの作品が特別なものであることをよく表している。偉大なギター・バンド同様、East Villageも4人組として結成。80年代半ばにハイ・ウィカムからロンドンに拠点を移したMartinとPaulのKelly兄弟(ベースとギター)に、ギターのJohn WoodとドラムのSpencer Smith(ドラムス)が加わって、グループはスタートした。WoodとKelly兄弟は曲作りとヴォーカルをシェア。彼らに影響を与えた60年代のフォーク・ロック・グループに敬意を表したかのような様々なソングライティング・ヴォイスが、East Villageの魅力のひとつとなった。

After releasing a couple of excellent singles that blended Byrds-ian jangle with winsome indie pop melodies, East Village began work on a full album of songs in the same delightful vein. After their label collapsed and sessions were interrupted, Drop Out finally appeared in 1993 on the Heavenly label. Sadly, the band had long since broken up, and the record landed on somewhat deaf ears as its low-key twang and unprepossessing charms proved something of an outlier in the flashy early days of Britpop. It harkens back to C86 and groups like Teenage Fanclub instead, casting an autumnal spell of soft vocal harmonies, calmly strummed guitars, and easygoing tempos thats peaceful and melancholy in equal amounts. The bulk of the album consists of gems like "Here It Comes" and "Circles" where the electric 12-string twang is bolstered by acoustic backing, with the bass and drums following gently behind and the vocals coming across like the very tender midnight confessions of a heartbroken soul. Its quite dreamlike and easy to sink into deeply and completely. However, East Village arent content to only dial up one mood, beautiful as it is. Other tracks hint at the kind of rambling trad rock the Charlatans were dishing out concurrently ("Silver Train"), whip up some fuzzy clouds of dream pop guitar ("Freeze Out"), add organ and some chugging classic-rock feel ("Black Autumn"), and in a stroke of genius, bring in former Dolly Mixture member Debsey Wykes to sing lead on the truly lovely "Everybody Knows," a pristine baroque pop-inspired ballad that ends the album much as it began: on the edge of tears and loving it. Its too bad that the bands finest moment -- where all the jangling pop genius hinted at on their singles came to fruition -- was also their last. That being said, the album remains and will be sure to please many generations of indie pop lovers lucky enough to discover Drop Outs many joys. ~ Tim Sendra
