The first of several collaborations between these two, Outland consists of a single piece a bit over an hour long, though the disc is arbitrarily divided into five-minute segments. It's essentially a drone that varies slightly in character from the initial sample of Mongolian throat singing to electronic hums and throbs. Not a whole lot happens to differentiate this from your standard new age-y bliss-out, after-the-rave relaxation music. Small, repeated rhythms burble to the surface on occasion, but to no great effect. If nothing else, one might have expected sort of Laswell-ian malevolence to taint the sounds in an interesting manner, but the entire affair remains disappointingly bland. Still, this subgenre of music has a following and Outland isn't appreciably worse than much of its competition (probably better, in fact), so if lightweight, spaced-out drone music is your thing, dig in. ~ Brian Olewnick
