It's no secret that the glitz and glamour of the Shania Twain/Garth Brooks/Faith Hill contingent has taken country music about as far from its roots as it can go. And it's even less of a secret that artists who do adhere to the genre's traditions, such as Gillian Welch and the Cox Family, have about as much commercial potential as Phillip Glass conducting the Gyuto Monks singing a Tibetan chant version of "Shake Ya Ass." But as the No Depression scene proved, there's still an audience for rootsy American music. The Gift's soundtrack boasts a rustic sound that seeks to combine the old with the new. Opening with Christopher Young's haunting, violin-laden theme, the album goes on to cover some of the brightest stars in country music's past and present. Neko Case's chilling wail makes "Furnace Room Lullaby" a creepy case of minimalist effectiveness, while Willie Nelson's Spanish-influenced guitar lends a melancholy mood to his "Great Divide." Recurring themes of loss and death drive the soundtrack, with Loretta Lynn's "Mama Why" and "Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven" providing a potent one-two punch in the heart of the album. And while songs by lesser-known artists like Amy Nelson and the Souvenirs help to add a more modern appeal, it's classic tracks from legends like Lee Hazelwood, Waylon Jennings, and Merle Haggard that make this an attractive package for fans of traditional country music. ~ Bret Love
