Personnel includes: Nat "King" Cole (vocals, piano); Owen Moore (guitar); Johnny Miller (bass).
The French Best of Jazz label released this Nat King Cole compilation as a primer to the best jazz recordings Cole was featured on, irrespective of chart position or whether they were actually released under his name. Compiled by five swing experts, An Introduction to Nat King Cole: His Best Recordings 1936-1947 leads off with his recording debut on "Stomping at the Panama," a 1936 side led by his brother Eddie's Solid Swingers. The collection moves on to a 1940 track led by Lionel Hampton, then hits several early classics of the King Cole Trio -- "Honeysuckle Rose," "I Like to Riff," "Hit That Jive Jack," and "Indiana." Fortunately, the compilers don't neglect Cole's best-known recordings -- "Straighten Up and Fly Right," "Sweet Lorraine," "The Frim Fram Sauce," "Route 66," "Nature Boy" -- and while that may cause trouble for collectors, the album makes a good second purchase (despite the overlap) for jazz fans, or perhaps a good first purchase for those who like to dig a little deeper into their music. The liner notes include a good historical biography as well as complete recording information. ~ John Bush
